Requirements for a Safe Bicycle Ride / Safety on Bicycles /

  • Always check your bicycle before starting a ride. Examine the brakes and tires. If you think that there is a problem, do not start to ride your bike before fixing it.
  • A helmet is very important for a safe ride. Do not ride without a helmet in order to protect yourself.
  • Do not cross the road when the red light is on. Wait for the green light to turn on. Obey the rules.
  • Observe the traffic during turns. Maintain your distance with other vehicles. Pay attention to other vehicles throughout the whole ride.
  • Do not get distracted while riding your bike. Do not use phones or similar items while moving. This is important because accidents happen in a moment’s notice.
  • You should use the right lane if there are no bike lanes on the road. Never ride your bike in the opposite direction of the traffic. Sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians. Do not use the sidewalks while riding.
  • It is better to prefer bright colored clothing in order to be easily noticed by other drivers.
  • We strongly recommend you to bring a flashlight with you if you are riding during the night. Riding without a flashlight at night is dangerous.
  • If you are riding bikes as a group, you should ride in a single line. Do not make turns while you are side-by-side. Ensure that you are not blocking other bicycles.
  • Pay attention to parked vehicles. This is the most prevalent accident type. For this reason, maintain some distance between you and parked cars while riding.
