An Icon on the Bosphorus: Kuleli Military High School

Situated along the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Kuleli Military High School is not just a military school but also a cultural and architectural heritage site.
Established during the late Ottoman Empire, this school holds significant importance in both education and architecture. Kuleli Military High School was founded in 1845 by Sultan Abdülmecid. However, the history of this area dates back to the Byzantine Empire. During that period, the region housed the Repentance Monastery. After the Ottoman Empire's conquest of Istanbul, the monastery was converted for military use.

The architecture of Kuleli Military High School reflects a combination of Ottoman and Western styles. The building's symmetrical towers, arched windows, and detailed stonework showcase the architectural style and Ottoman aesthetics of the era. The façade of the building is adorned with details characteristic of Ottoman architecture. The towers, one of the most prominent architectural features, are symmetrically positioned at the entrance, giving the building its distinctive appearance.

During the Crimean War (1853-1856), the building of Kuleli Military High School was used as a hospital. Wounded soldiers from the Ottoman army and allied forces were treated here. During this period known as Kuleli Barracks, the structure became a crucial center for healthcare services.

Kuleli Military High School has witnessed numerous transformations throughout history and has been used for various purposes. From the Repentance Monastery in the Byzantine era to an Ottoman military school and a hospital during the Crimean War, this building reflects the historical and cultural richness of Istanbul.
