Cistern of Philoxenos

A Stage for Unforgettable Experiences
Binbirdirek Cistern, Istanbuls historic and cultural heritage. It is also known as the Philoxenos Cistern;

It was built in the 4th century by Roman senator Philoxenos during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Constantine I. Binbirdirek Cistern, the second largest underground cistern in Istanbul, takes its name from the many columns inside the cistern. There are 224 marble columns in the cistern. 212 of these columns have survived to this day. These columns, which bear the architectural features of the Byzantine period, create the cisterns impressive atmosphere.

Binbirdirek Cistern has undergone many restorations throughout history. These restorations have preserved the cisterns original architectural features, while also making it compatible with modern needs. Today, the cistern is one of the favorite spots for both locals and tourists. Today, Binbirdirek Cistern is a structure that has adapted to modern life while preserving its historical texture.

Many events are organized inside the cistern that offer visitors an unforgettable experience. These events include concerts, exhibitions, and special events. Binbirdirek Cistern is a must-see address for those who want to discover Istanbuls historical riches.
