The church was built on the site of an old Rum Orthodox cemetery and a wooden church that was no longer considered to be adequate for the needs of the time. The building, designed by the famous architect Potesaros and built by Vasilakis İoannidis Efendi, was founded on August 13, 1876 during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, and it was officially opened on Sunday, September 14, 1880.
The church is surrounded by a large garden and is notable for its central dome, which is built in the Greek cross plan, and its sturdy structure. The twelve windows on this magnificent structure, which is accompanied by two four-story Gothic-style bell towers, symbolize the twelve apostles of Jesus. Four pendentives on the drum of the dome are decorated with frescoes of six-winged seraphim angels.
Aya Triada Church, which makes a valuable contribution to the rich history and cultural fabric of Istanbul, is both architecturally stunning and remains an important place of worship for the Rum Orthodox community.
