Jackie Matisse (1931–2021) first flew her iconic kites in 1976 during a trip to Istanbul. Today, her colorful kites, including Rainbow (Arc-en-Ciel, 1983), appear on the façade of the Arter building, inviting visitors to discover the exhibition Kite Time.
In the dimmer gallery spaces, Sea Tails (1983), a video installation, combines underwater footage of Matisse’s kites with ocean sounds. Visitors are also invited to explore Bottled Dreams (Reves en Bouteille, 1981), where kite fragments float inside bottles of water.
On the third floor, Sky Fleas Circus (Poux du Ciel, 1979) presents a mosaic of small sailcloth kites, creating an immersive, playful atmosphere.
Kite Time offers an exciting glimpse into Jackie Matisse’s creative world, celebrating her dynamic and colorful kites as a powerful form of artistic expression.
