Maaria Wirkkala’s Landing Prohibited, first displayed at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and acquired by the Arter Collection the same year, is now presented in Istanbul for the first time.
Landing Prohibited features a ‘sea’ of broken glass, a traditional Venetian boat (sandolo) gently rocking amidst the glass, a suspended glass ladder, and a solitary oar. The broken glass fragments, sourced from the Venini Glass Factory in Murano where her father worked, represent the treacherous sea that prevents safe landing, symbolizing the dangers of immigration. Inspired by the "Landing prohibited" signs in Venice, Wirkkala draws parallels to global anti-immigrant sentiments and the perilous journeys immigrants undertake.
Originally created for the Finnish Pavilion, the installation is now reinterpreted for Arter’s gallery space, blending Wirkkala's personal history with broader social and political issues.
